South Providence Neighborhood Association (SPNA)

Thank you all who were able to attend our Regular Meeting last Thursday for the South Providence Neighborhood Association (SPNA). We will email the meeting notes by the end of next week, along with the answers to questions & concerns that were address during the discussion with the City of Providence’s Department of Planning & Development.

The City of Providence and RIPTA will host a Public Information Meeting on updates for both the Downtown Transit Corridor (DTC), which will connect Providence Station and the RI Hospital district with a high-frequency bus corridor, as well as proposed changes to Kennedy Plaza. This meeting will be held next Tuesday, May 9, from 5:30pm until 7pm, on the 1st floor Conference Room of theDoorley Municipal Building, located at 444 Westminster Street in Providence. The DTC is a project that SPNA continues to follow for assessing any impacts to our neighborhood.

Please join SPNA in attending the public meeting hosted by the City of Providence to review both the Progress Report and Action Steps from the Community Conversation held back on March 11 about the future of Broad Street, as well as to prioritize the provided community input & determine next steps. This meeting will be held onSaturday, May 13, from 9am until 10:30am at the Southside Cultural Center, located at 393 Broad Street in Providence. Please feel free to invite additional people who would be interested, and attached is the flyer for this meeting.

Thank you all for your continued focus on & providing SPNA feedback on how to best address the ongoing problems with the RIPTA bus shelter in front of Salvation Army on Broad Street. We receive different perspectives & ideas on how to best address the matter, so SPNA will convene a subcommittee that will lead our efforts & coordinate the action needed to resolve the challenges of that location. Please let us know if you would like to participate – we will schedule our 1st subcommittee meeting within the next 1-2 weeks. In the meantime please continue to contact RIPTA’s Customer Support Services to report complaints & concerns regarding this bus shelter – we need to ensure that RIPTA receives these reports directly from our neighbors and bus patrons. You may reach RIPTA at (401 784-9500, extension 2012, and they’re available Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm, and Saturdayfrom 8am until 4pm.

SPNA will hold its next regular meeting on Thursday, May 25, from 6pm until 8pm, at the Community Preparatory School located at 126 Somerset Street in Providence. At this meetingSPNA will have Karen Santilli with Crossroads Rhode Island to provide an information about their current activities & initiatives, along with providing our neighbors the opportunity to have more in-depth dialogue on related challenges in our community and how Crossroads may engage SPNA & our other neighbors on the best methods for addressing the issues together.

Please feel free to contact us by phone at (401) 369-1334 or by email if you have any additional questions. You may also invite and share this communication with other neighbors interested in these activities and/or want to learn more about SPNA. We also look forward to seeing you this weekend andnext Thursday. Take care and enjoy the rest of the week!
