Knight Memorial Library to Reopen on October 23

PROVIDENCE, RI – Providence Community Library (PCL) is pleased to announce that Knight Memorial Library will reopen to customers on October 23. The building, which is located at 275 Elmwood Avenue, closed temporarily in late July for essential repairs and upgrades. Services and programs will resume during normal scheduled hours, Monday to Friday. Knight Memorial will be closed Saturdays until the end of the year and South Providence Library will continue to offer Saturday hours until the end of 2017.

“We regretted having to close the library over the summer to deal with urgent repairs and behind-the-scenes upgrades. Happily, we have now obtained the go-ahead to reopen safely for business” said Library Director, Jeff Cannell. “PCL is grateful to our community partners, The Center for South East Asians and the West End Recreation Center, for providing temporary accommodation for Knight Memorial’s after school and language learning programs for several weeks while the library building was closed. We also thank our customers for their patience during this difficult time.”

Work will continue intermittently on the historic 1922 building but PCL will do everything it can to minimize inconvenience to customers. For more information about PCL’s locations, hours, services and programs, visit www.provcomlib.org .

Peace Flag Workshops at Providence Community Library

Too scared to turn on the news? Yes, life can feel that way these days but here’s an antidote. In September, PCL will host a series of workshops that is dedicated to the ideals of non-violence.

The Peace Flag Project is inspired by the tradition of Tibetan Prayer Flags. Tibetans believe that prayers for peace, compassion and kindness are carried on the wind around the world. Founded by Ginny Fox, the Peace Flag Project began in Rhode Island as a personal therapy to cope with illness but gradually grew into a nonprofit initiative in which diverse organizations and individuals now make thousands of peace flags on an annual basis. Each flag is a personal, creative experience and a quiet reflection on what its maker believes would make the world a better place.

The flags will remain on display at each library in celebration of the Month of Peace and the International Day of Peace (September 21st ).Learn more about the Peace Flag Project here.
